I love charity shopping and not just because you can grab a great bargain from a well known store (because yes I did once find a Ralph Lauren top for £3.99 ) but because the form of primary recycling is great for both you purse and the environment – here are a few reasons why you should buy charity shop.
I’ll start with the obvious one, you can get an amazing bargain. Okay so you may have to hunt for said amazing bargain but they’re a world away from the price of highstreet shops. I got this adorable dress for £5 and it’s the perfect summer sun dress (even if the weather hasn’t held out long enough for me to wear it) a denim jacket makes it more autumn appropriate.
Buying from a charity shop encourages you to get creative. I’m not talking bright green jackets creative (unless you do have a particular niche for bright green jackets) but you might see a garment you wouldn’t see anywhere else and just fall in love; charity shops give you that opportunity to find a little gem and try something new.
You may not think about it when you’ve just spotted a piece you love but charity shops are a more sustainable way of buying clothes. Trends come and go but a charity shop piece can be labelled as ‘vintage’ for as long as you want – instead of ending up in landfill they have returned to your humble home (ain’t you lucky).
Also giving to charity is a great feeling. Whilst the latest trend from Topshop is great to have, the garment will soon become obsolete and so many products that are thrown out immediately go to landfill. Giving to charity is a form of primary recycling but it also helps contribute to charity shops such as Cancer Research and Oxfam. You don’t know how much of a difference giving your old goods to charities makes and it’s a great feeling knowing you are helping raise money in a form that isn’t always obvious.
If you don’t find anything the first time, try again. Charity shops are full of bizarre mundane pieces but they’re also full of treasures; you just have to hunt. It’s also a form of cheap entertainment, I could spend hours browsing various charity shops and even if I do buy something chances are it cost over £10.
