New Year, maybe a new wardrobe clear out? Or did you pick up some amazing pieces in the sale but you don’t have any room in your wardrobe anymore? Over the past year I’ve started buying less garments for my wardrobe and before you ask if I’m in a fashion rut; no I just have enough pieces that I can create endless looks without buying more. I had a clear out before the end of 2016 and managed to get a few bags to give to charity; my wardrobe has a new lease of life: I’ve found clothes that I didn’t know I had and I’ve been able to create new looks. So here I am to tell you all about you can start a capsule wardrobe. 
Tartan Brunette is an absolute star when it comes to a minimalist and capsule wardrobe. She does updates, outfit ideas and it is literally the best thing if you have a capsule wardrobe but don’t know how to transition from season to season (or if you want inspiration on how to get started). She wrote a great post on ‘why you should start a capsule wardrobe‘ and there are things you don’t really think about. It makes getting ready in the morning easier and you can save time browsing shops like Topshop or ASOS for the latest trend. Buying better quality (and ethically better) garments less often means you can buy some luxury pieces and it feels like a ‘treat yo self’ moment, without the added guilt because it will not become obsolete or lost in your wardrobe, these are thought out pieces that are not bought in the midst of your next Primark haul. Tolly wrote a great post recently about why ethical fashion shouldn’t make you feel bad, if you’re thinking about it and making yourself aware of the benefits of a capsule or ethical wardrobe then that’s a start and you shouldn’t feel guilty.
That said, the amount of striped tops means I don’t have a necessarily have a capsule wardrobe right now and I’m really not as succinct in the top department as I should be but I have nailed the trousers/skirts department – they can be worn for both going for a night out (on the rare occasion that is) or chilling with my friends at home. Slowly I’m working my way to a wardrobe that is equally capsule and that I love.
Multiple use items are da bomb when it comes to a capsule wardrobe; but don’t limit yourself to only basics. I have a few statement pieces that I don’t wear all the time but when I do I feel totally boss – fashion is about feeling good and confident in your own skin and having a wardrobe with only 37 really doesn’t limit you to feeling the best version of you there is. 
What are my go to picks for a capsule wardrobe?
We all need a nice pair of trainers for dancing all night or a woodland stroll, these common projects are perfect for both occasions. A striped top was inevitably going to be on the list, I’ve been crushing comme des garcons play top from farfetch for a while. Definitely a white top that can be worn under something or just on it’s own – layer up that thang (basic tops in different colours just add a little pop of brightness to an outfit that is perfect for all seasons).
Skinny blue jeans, as I wrote about in my 2017 resolutions post, I am making it my mission to buy more ethically this year so if anyone can recommend some ethically made jeans the hit me up! A backpack that can pretty much fit anything in it is a necessity, I have a black one from Matt and Nat that is both ethically made and fits everything you might need. I got a gorgeous scarf for Christmas (my one is in grey) from & other stories and I can tell it will last me years, it’s big and not too long: I am obsessed. I’ve had my perfect navy jumper for a good two years and it’s my go to whenever I don’t know what to wear (it’s less handy when you don’t know what to wear on a night out). If you can’t buy the product ethically then make sure it lasts a long time and take good care of the garment. i couldn’t find the one from Gap that I bought years ago but I did find a lovely jumper from a new fashion brand I’ve found called Birdsong (I’m planning to do a post on their store soon as I am in <3.
But really, a capsule wardrobe is meant to be 37 pieces that encapsulate YOUR style and whether that’s through the colours of choice of accessory then that’s what makes the wardrobe your own and it’s so personal.
