ethical accessories

Following the start of my journey into ethical buying, for Christmas I asked for this super sleek Matt and Nat, oh how I loved opening this gem on Christmas morning. How have I managed not to blog about this for over a month? I’m not quite sure myself.

Matt and Nat (short for mat(t)erial and nature) are the ethical accessory brand that you need to know about. Their bags are vegan, made from 100% recycled plastic bottles and are an all round amazing brand. I mentioned them in my wishlist post last week. I stumbled on the brand on Urban Outfitters one day and it wasn’t till I’d basically googled the brand, scrolled through the whole website and made a note of the styles that I liked that I realised how mega cool this brand actually is. In addition to being vegan, sustainable materials are sourced and their mantra ‘Live Beautifully’ and aims to take care of the environment as it takes care of us.

The products are made in factories but their website is really transparent, they discuss how their factories are visited regularly and they build a relationship with the factory owners. It’s great to see that the brand are working to develop a better future for both worker and customer, the materials used are constantly evolving to product even more environmentally friendly bags.

Buying items, in particular bags, that last are literally the best – I love the sleek design of basically all the Matt and Nat bags and I think I might have to buy a tote bag when I start college later this year, the bags are a great size and I won’t have to worry about not being able to fit all my books in. The brands based in Montreal so if you order from their website it may take a while to arrive, alternatively Asos also stock Matt and Nat on their Eco Edit page (this also means if you’re a student you can get a bit of money off)!

But it isn’t just Matt and Nat that sell ethical bags! Birdsong have a great selection of bags on their website, they’re not vegan unfortunately but are made by female artisans in Ethiopia and Mexico. There are quite a few ethical bags on the market when you look for them, even one of the other favourite bag brands Kanken are making the change to sustainable accessories, the Fjallraven Re-Kanken is made with a recycled polyester outer and made through a process that uses mininal water energy and chemicals. Whilst the human manufacturing behind the product is important, the processes applied to the fabrics are equally important in regards to making an ethical product. Dying and finishing processes can use and contaminate large volumes of water; this can harm wildlife and eco-systems. If you were on the look out for a cheaper bag then I would totally recommend this, they’re super stylish and sustainable!

If you’re into doing some DIY then there’s nothing stopping you making your own ethical bag! There are so many websites that sell organic cotton totes, just buy some fabric paint (or a sewing machine if you have one) and decorate to your hearts content! Pinterest is brimming with artsy designs that you can paint, embroider or replicate and you can create something totally unique and eco friendly.

Currently writing this post with my new wireless keyboard I bought last week that’s connected to my iPad. I don’t have a laptop so if I want to blog I have to sit down at the main computer in my house and I wanted something so that I could sit down and blog quick and easily. WOW this has actually changed my blogging set up though, I’m sat in bed watching youtube whilst writing about ethical backpacks – could I want anymore? It is literally the dream gadget and a steal at around 10 and I am so impressed with it (I promise this isn’t sponsored, here’s the link if you want to buy it). I shit you not I felt like such a kid when this worked, it is the stuff of genius.

I also don’t mention politics and world issues enough on my blog, I try and take an active stance on my social media but writing about world topics is lacking on my blog and my posts, I’ve changed what I blog about in the past year but discussions about world issues is flawed. Following the Muslim ban last week I cannot articulate how angry I am at Trump, what has happened in America is so incredibly saddening and is a step backwards in terms of racial equality. I hope those of you in America that may be affected are okay and I can only hope the situation improves, the protests outside JFK are hopefully just a start of the solidarity that needs to be shown towards racial hate. I feel like these things need to be mentioned, as an ‘influencer’ I do have a voice, however big or small.

Do you love Matt and Nat as much as I do? Let me know your thoughts and also any posts about anything and everything you’d like to see on my blog, I am open to all suggestions!
